The Deputy Sector Navigator for Global Trade and Director of the San Diego Center for International Trade Development (CITD), Victor Castillo, was invited by the CalWORKs program at Southwestern College to give a workshop on career opportunities in the global trade sector to students participating in the program. CalWorks, which stands for California Work Opportunities and Responsibility to Kids, is a state program that provides cash assistance and services to eligible needy families in California. The CalWORKs Program at Southwestern College provides assistance to TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) participants which include academic, career, personal counseling and employment assistance. Mr. Castillo’s presentation to the students included an overview of the sector and information on the various careers in global trade and supply chain management, including the educational and training options available regionally to prepare students to take advantage of opportunities for high-wage jobs in these fields.
In addition to the workshop, San Diego CITD staff members Gabriel Reyes and Desiree Dolores participated in the CalWORKs program’s CTE Expo on January 23rd. During the Expo, Gabriel and Desiree provided information on Southwestern College’s International Logistics and Transportation Program and the SCPro Fundamentals supply chain management certification program offered through the CITD. The goal of the expo was to introduce CalWORKs students to the various Career Technical Education programs available at Southwestern College and provide an opportunity for the students to speak with counselors and faculty representatives from the programs.
